A Glass Canopy at Hudson Yards

When New York opened the 34th Street–Hudson Yards station on the 7 line in 2015, its street entrance got a curved, gridded glass vault over the escalators. It looks familiar. The Washington Metro canopies I designed starting in 2001 do the same job the same way: a glazed vault that marks the way down and lets daylight reach the escalators.

My drawings for the Dupont Circle North canopy, pictured, were submitted in January 2015, eight months before the Hudson Yards station opened that September. I can't say whether my canopies inspired it, but I like to think they had a hand in making the glass vault a sign for "subway here."
